According to a newsletter published by the Canadian Auto Workers Union and obtained by Reuters, GM plans to delay the next generation of its popular Cruze model by a full year. Originally scheduled for a 2014 debut, the new model will be released only at the end of 2015 as a 2016 model.

Chairwoman Karen Fleming of CAW Local 4451 expressed disappointment at the delay but confirmed “the Chevy Cruze program has been pushed back a year and will not start until 2015." Local 4451 is based in Stratford, Ontario.

Sales of the Cruze have been increasing for the first half of 2013 and GM says it needs more time for a complete redesign both inside and out before the next model hits showrooms. It’s clear GM feels the current iteration still has enough life in it to ride out the delay.

The Chevy Cruze has so far been a global success, selling almost 2 million units worldwide. North America was actually the last to get the vehicle in 2010, compared to early 2009 for most of the Asian & European markets.
