It’s been confirmed that the next generation Nissan Titan will be available with a turbocharged 5.0-liter V8 diesel version developed by Cummins.

Different form the Cummins powerplants found in Dodge’s Ram pickups, the Titan Cummins will produce 300 horsepower and about 500 lb-ft of torque.

The engines will be assembled at the Cummins facility based in Columbus, Indiana. Thereafter, they will be sent to the Canton plant in Mississippi, to be mounted the Nissan Titan.

The announcement comes shortly after Nissan acquired former Ram CEO Fred Diaz. Diaz didn’t waste any time making a big move to use the Cummins name which he is surely familiar with after his stint managing Ram.

The Titan pickup hasn’t seen any significant changes since its inception all the way back in the 2003 model year. That’s over a full decade of offering the same vehicle and, if sales are any indication, it desperately needs a change. Sales for this year have dropped over 20 percent compared to last year while Nissan’s US sales rose by 9%.

The next generation Titan isn’t scheduled to arrive until the 2015 model year.
