The first Tesla Model S comes off the line at Tilburg, Netherlands

Electric car maker Tesla Motors has opened its first assembly plant in the Netherlands to service customers in Europe.

The facility is 18,900 square metres and will only do the final assembly of the Model S. Individual parts will shipped there from elsewhere.

The plant is located in the city of Tilburg which is key because of its proximity to a variety of transportation networks, including the port of Rotterdam.

"This location is pivotal to Tesla's European operations, which are expanding rapidly over the coming months with openings of around 15 new stores and service centres," said Bryan Batista, Tesla's EU sales director.

The Electric car maker reported better than expected earnings for the second quarter and is planning to release new models, including the Model-X SUV, in the near future.
