Volkswagen may be Working on a Golf R Estate

According to the spy shots taken by worldcarfans.com, Volkswagen may be working on a high-performance version of its Golf Estate. The car was spotted undergoing testing on the Nürburgring circuit, where the German manufacturer develops a lot of their prototypes.

The car would use the 2.0 L engine from the Golf R, giving it around 300 hp. That power would then be transmitted through a 6-speed manual (or an optional DSG automatic transmission) to the 4MOTION system, sending it to all four wheels. On the regular hatchback Golf R, this setup would propel the car from 0-100 in 4.9 seconds. With the estate version weighing a little more, the performance of the new car would probably be a little lower. Still, there are not many estate cars in the 5 second range!

There is currently no confirmation by Volkswagen, but this car would make a lot of sense. Since all the parts have already been developed, this model would not cost much to make, and would target a different market than the hatchback version of the Golf R. Also, it would be an ideal transition car, situated just between the more affordable VWs, and entry models from Audi...

If the estate Golf R is approved for production, expect to see it unveiled at the Paris Auto Show in October.

After that, we would have to keep our fingers crossed for Volkswagen to bring it over here...
