Insurance Scam In A Bugatti Veyron

We know that trying to scam your insurance company is not a good idea, and that you shouldn't try it. One man learned that the hard way, as he is now facing 20 years in jail after one of his schemes went wrong in 2009.

Andy House bought a Bugatti Veyron in 2009 for a million dollars and insured it for $2.2 million (this is standard procedure, mind you). A few months later, he mysteriously ran his car into a lagoon and left the engine running, totalling it. When asked why he did it, he said that a pelican flew in front of him, forcing him to veer off course.

Unfortunately for our would-be schemer, a passenger in a nearby car filmed the whole scene (which is what you did when you saw a Veyron in 2009), and you can immediately see that there is no bird whatsoever.

After a lengthy court procedure, Mr. House then tried to change his statement by saying that he dropped his phone while driving, and that the accident happened while he tried to pick it up. The judge didn't buy it, and he finally admitted to organizing the whole thing as an insurance scheme.

The only thing remaining now is to determine his sentence, but he could face up to two decades in jail.

The moral of this story: if you want to scheme your insurance out of a ludicrous amount of money, be sure no one is filming your car!
