Volkswagen Golf Alltrack: Return of the Syncro

In 1986, Volkswagen was producing an ‘’off-road’’ version of their Golf MK2 called the Syncro. It was not exactly built to go rescue Jeep Wranglers from mud pits, but it was still equipped with AWD, it was higher than the regular Golf, and it could go where no front-wheel drive Volkswagen could. Only 26,000 of them were ever produced, so they remain relatively rare.

For 2015, the manufacturer decided to use this idea again: the result is the new Golf Alltrack. Just like the first one, it is higher (by two centimetres) and it receives a 4Motion drivetrain. However, where the 1986 Syncro only had 90 horses, the Golf Alltrack uses a 1.8 litre engine that develops 177 horsepower, enabling it to run from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds.

We will be able to see the car for the first time at the Paris Motor Show, and European sales should start next summer at a starting price of 29,300 euros.
