A few months ago, rumours about an eventual successor to the RX-series of sport coupes started to crop up. Now this is a pretty standard event, when this or that Japanese magazine announces they have insider's information about a new generation of the rotary engine, the media jumps on the story, and then the whole Mazda community anxiously waits for some official news. The whole story usually dies after a few months (only to start again a year later, when another magazine claims THEY have insider's news) but this time the rumours were strong enough to convince Mazda's own CEO to speak up about it.

In a recent interview, he announced that there was no rotary-powered car in the manufacturer's product planning for the next few years. He said that they don't have the resources to build a new vehicle from scratch, and that they would concentrate on the Skyactiv technologies they are currently working on.
