Honda Has To Pay A $70 Million Fine

After a thorough investigation, the NHTSA has just announced their verdict on Honda’s responsibility regarding some missing accident and repair reports: the Japanese manufacturer has been accused of having failed to report more than 1,700 cases of injuries and warrantied repair.

Honda will have to pay a fine of 70 million dollars, which is a new record for this type of fine.

The maximum fine is usually 35 million dollars, but Honda has been asked to pay for two different cases: they failed to present the NHTSA with 1,729 injury reports between 2003 and 2014, and they also did not alert them of warrantied repairs they made. The National Highway Traffic Safety Association needs those files to see if a specific part is problematic, in case they need to force the manufacturer to perform a recall.

Of the injury numbers, Honda says that eight of them were caused by Takata’s explosive airbags.

Honda immediately accepted the fine, and they will also make sure to send reports to the NHTSA in the future.

The American government is currently trying to have the 35 million dollar limit raised, since this amount is not enough to make a dent in a company with a net worth of more than $100 billion.
