The Mazda MX-5 always represented the perfect middle ground between fuel economy and driving pleasure. With its selection of small engines and its light weight, the roadster is the perfect vehicle to enjoy under the sun without draining your bank account.

With the most recent update of the MX-5, we learned that the ND would be lighter than the outgoing model. When a car gets lighter, it usually means that fuel consumption will be reduced. The EPA published their ratings for the Japanese roadster, and we are pleasantly surprised with their results.

The 2016 Mazda MX-5 will be frugal. According to the EPA numbers, the car is rated at 8.7 litres per 100 km in the city, 6.9 litres on the highway and an average of 7.9 litres per 100 km.

These numbers are for the manual-equipped MX-5; the automatic drinks even less fuel on the highway, with a projected consumption of 6.5 litres per 100 km.

Mazda points out that these numbers mean that the new MX-5 is 25% more eco-friendly than it was last year.
