According to Mercedes-Benz’s new nomenclature, SUVs are now be named with the same letters as the sedans: the small SUV has become the GLC, followed by the GLE and finally the new GLS, which will replace the current GL.

Mercedes-Benz just launched the 2017 GLS, and as we suspected, it is a modernized version of the GL.

The most obvious change is at the front: the brand’s logo is more massive than ever and the headlights are sleeker, now looking more and more like the S-Class’. The back now features LED lights and the GLS now sports new colours and wheels.

The cockpit has also been given attention: the console is more in line with the rest of the Mercedes-Benz lineup, and now features the brand’s proprietary tablet-looking infotainment screen. The GL’s seven seats are also covered in Nappa leather.

A variety of engines are available: the GLS 550 4MATIC comes standard with a twin-turbo V8 producing 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque on tap. If you don’t need as much power, the GLS 450 4MATIC comes with a 3-litre V6 and 362 horsepower. There is also the diesel GLS 350d 4MATIC. At the top of the range sits the GLS 63, with its 577 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque.

All versions – except the sporty GLS 63 – can be had with a low range and a centre differential. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Prices haven’t been revealed, but we can guess that the 2017 GLS should be around $80,000, which is the starting price of the current GL.

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS should arrive in dealerships in March 2016.
