A Four-Cylinder Engine for the Jeep Wrangler?

Following the market trend of downsizing engines and adding turbochargers, Chrysler will allegedly unveil a new engine. However, this won’t be another huge V8; if the rumours are true, we can expect a turbocharged four-pot coming out of a Mopar assembly plant.

Nicknamed Hurricane, this newcomer will supposedly have a displacement of 2.0 litres. According to anonymous sources at Automotive News, we can expect a power output of roughly 300 horsepower. It will also pack some of the latest technologies, such as an aluminum block, a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection.

FCA currently builds a similar engine: in the Alfa Romeo Giulia, a 2.0-litre four developing 276 horsepower will be offered.

The first application of the Hurricane engine will be interesting: according to Autonews' sources, this mill could debut in the next Jeep Wrangler! A smaller powertrain could certainly help drop this vehicle’s thirst for fuel, but its curb weight would also have to come down: the 2016 Wrangler tips the scale at more than 1900 kilos.
