A quarter of a century ago, video game creator SEGA unveiled a new character that took the world by storm, and quickly became one of the most famous in the industry alongside the Mario and Luigi brothers, Pac-Man and those pesky Pokémon. On July 22nd at the House of Blues in San Diego, SEGA paid tribute to Sonic the Hedgehog, star of his own video game series, during the Comic-Con festival. That evening, Honda also celebrated Sonic’s birthday by unveiling the Sonic Civic.

Based on a Honda Civic Touring sedan, equipped with a turbocharged, 1.5-litre engine, the Sonic Civic is dressed in a cloak of blue paint and wrapped in a design that mimics the colours of the character and the original video game. The car’s grille was painted black, while the alloy wheels were painted yellow and gold up front, white and red at the rear.

The cockpit features seats upholstered in blue and white Katzkin leather, highlighted with embroidered Sonic 25th anniversary logos. In the trunk, Honda installed a Rockford Fosgate audiovisual system with two 500-watt amps, two 500-watt subwoofers and a flip-up, 32-inch screen.

Obviously, Honda has no intention of selling the Sonic Civic. However, SEGA announced two new titles featuring Sonic the Hedgehog, which will be released in 2017. One of them will be called Sonic Mania and will be available on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.
