The industry is slowly turning toward electric propulsion, but internal combustion engines continue to be updated since they still make up the majority of the automotive world's powertrains.

Mercedes-Benz just announced their newest engines, which includes four, six and eight cylinders. They will share some technologies and, in some cases, the same block. Each cylinder has a capacity of half a litre. We also have a confirmation that the manufacturer will bring back the straight-six, a configuration that pretty much nobody (except BMW) used in the last few years.

The manufacturer will pack some pretty advanced technologies into these engines, like a gasoline particulate filter, a 48-volt electric system (which will help the start/stop system) as well as a starter-alternator combo integrated between the engine and the gearbox.

Those new engines are all made out of aluminium and will be used throughout the world. Some will be diesel-powered. The six-cylinder will also pack an electric turbocharger.
