Hyundai Could Start Building Supercars

It was during CES 2018, in Las Vegas, while unveiling its all-new fuel cell vehicle that Hyundai spoke with Australian media about a possible supercar project. The Korean carmaker claims that it’s not only working on clean and autonomous vehicles, but also plans on introducing a serious, high-performance sports car in the years to come.

For now, these are nothing more than speculations, but Hyundai has been talking about such a vehicle for quite some time. If it were to build a supercar, it would undoubtedly be a hybrid, but would it be sold under the Hyundai or the Genesis name? No clue for now.

With influent individuals currently running things at Hyundai like Albert Biermann, coming in from BMW’s M division, and Luc Donkerwolke at the head of design, who also penned the Lamborghini Murciélago and Gallardo, all the ingredients are in place for a real performance machine. As a matter of fact, Hyundai has flirted with the idea in the past through two concept cars, the PassoCorto, a mid-engine supercar, and the HND-9, a high-luxury sports coupe.

When Australian media Drive interrogated Donkerwolke about the project, the designer confirmed that something is currently “in the works.” It was then Yang Woong Chul, vice president of research and development at Hyundai that confirmed that the carmaker is interested in the idea of producing a plug-in hybrid supercar.

According to the same source, Hyundai is currently benchmarking high-performance machines such as the Porsche 911 and Lamborghini Huracán at its Namyang development centre, in South Korea.

With the Genesis brand now gaining more and more credibility in the luxury car segment, and the N division now giving way to a new era of performance for Hyundai, it wouldn’t be surprising that such a product comes to life in the near future.
