When General Motors introduced the next generation of its light-duty full-size trucks a year ago, it promised a six-engine lineup that would include an all-new 3.0-litre Duramax inline-six turbo-diesel engine starting in early 2019.

We’re happy to report that the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 can now be configured with this option on the GM Canada website, although pricing details are not specified yet.

More importantly, we finally have the performance figures we were looking for. A company rep confirmed to The Car Guide that the 3.0-litre Duramax turbo-diesel delivers a class-leasing 277 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter coming online at just 1,500 rpm. It is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission with stop/start technology.

In comparison, the 3.0-litre Power Stroke available in the current Ford F-150 produces 250 horsepower and 440 lb.-ft. of torque, while the Ram 1500’s 3.0-litre EcoDiesel (not on sale yet) is rated at 260 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft. of torque. So, if you’re looking for the strongest diesel-powered half-ton truck on the market, you will have to visit a Chevy or GMC dealer. Payload and towing capacities have yet to be announced, however.

For Chevy Silverado 1500 customers, the Duramax can be had in 4x2 or 4x4 configuration on LT, RST, LTZ and High Country models, the first two requiring the Convenience and Trailering packages as well. Meanwhile at GMC, it is available on all trim levels except the base Sierra 1500.

We’ll keep you updated as further information is made official.
