All Subaru Vehicles to be Electrified by mid-2030

Subaru is not a very big player on the global stage and it doesn’t have a ton of resources to develop and build highly sophisticated technologies, but the fact of the matter is that it currently lags behind many other car companies when it comes to electrification.

There’s a Forester e-Boxer in Europe and the Crosstrek PHEV on this side of the Atlantic, though the latter went on sale in Canada just last week.

At least Subaru has a plan. During a press conference in Japan on Monday, president Tomomi Nakamura stressed the importance of aligning Subaru operations with the challenges raised by climate change.

As it accelerates efforts to become a cleaner brand, Subaru wants hybrid and all-electric vehicles to account for at least 40 percent of global sales before the new decade is over. And by the first half of the next decade, all Subaru vehicles sold around the world will be electrified in some way.

One of them will be the fully electric SUV co-developed with Toyota that we told you about last summer. A sketch of the concept has recently surfaced:

At about the same time, new environmental initiatives should help Subaru reduce CO2 emissions from its factories and offices to 30 percent below 2017 levels.

Finally, by 2030 Subaru plans to reduce average well-to-wheel CO2 emissions from new vehicles sold worldwide by 90 percent or more compared to 2010 levels.

Nakamura said core technologies like Subaru’s horizontally opposed Boxer engines, symmetrical all-wheel drive and EyeSight driver assist system will remain at the forefront and keep getting better as the company moves quickly to increase efficiency, safety and enjoyment on the road.
