Tesla Hints at Even More Powerful Superchargers
Last night was the special delivery event for the new 1,020-horsepower Model S Plaid, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk hinted that even more powerful and faster-charging Superchargers are coming.
The current Supercharger network consists of more than 25,000 stalls globally, with a mix of older V2 units (up to 150 kW) and new V3 units (up to 250 kW).
Long-range versions of the latest Tesla vehicles have been able to utilize the peak output of 250 kW for about a year now, but with the recent update to the Model S and Model X, expect more than that.
Musk talked about moving to 280 kW, 300 kW and even 350 kW. With the Model S Plaid, which boasts new battery modules and offers a range of 628 kilometres, you could get 301 kilometres—nearly half the total range—in just 15 minutes in the best-case scenario.
By the way, the Model S Plaid can also sprint to 100 km/h in 2.1 seconds, run the quarter-mile in 9.23 seconds and achieve a top speed of 322 km/h.
And as you can see on the images that were shown during the special delivery event, Tesla is still planning to offer a yoke-style steering wheel as an option. Regulatory authorities in the U.S., namely the NHTSA, are currently evaluating this technology and will soon determine if it’s legal or not.
