2022 GMC Sierra Adds Two New Models and Plenty of Tech

Following the lead of the Chevrolet Silverado, the GMC Sierra receives a number of enhancements for 2022 including two unique models and lots of new features.

Fans and potential customers got a chance to see it for the first time in a TV commercial that aired during Thursday Night Football.

Denali Ultimate

Let’s start with the new top-of-the-line Sierra Denali Ultimate. Building on the success of the upscale Denali sub-brand over the past two decades, GMC aims to raise the luxury bar even higher for 2022.

In Denali Ultimate trim, the Sierra 1500 comes standard with Super Cruise, the semi-autonomous driving technology first introduced on select Cadillac vehicles and now featuring Trailering Assist so you can pull a trailer, boat, camper and more while driving hands-free. The technology is optional on regular Sierra Denali models.

Other highlights include distinctive headlights, GMC’s signature MultiPro tailgate and CarbonPro bed, a dark chrome finish on the grille and badges, as well as a map of Mount Denali in some of the leather surfaces. Pretty neat stuff.

As for power, the Sierra Denali Ultimate houses the brawny 6.2-litre V8 engine delivering 420 horsepower. It is mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission.

AT4X for Extreme Off-road Fun

So that was the classy part. When the time comes to get dirty, you’ll want to have the new Sierra AT4X, which also boasts the 6.2-litre V8. On- and off-road capability is enhanced with a Multimatic suspension featuring DSSV shocks, while one-pedal driving is possible even on rocky terrain.

Speaking of which, you can alternate between the various drive modes to improve grip and handling depending on the conditions. And if you intend to push the Sierra AT4X way off the beaten path, the underbody skid plates will definitely provide extra peace of mind. Maximum payload and towing capacity are rated at 1,420 pounds and 8,900 pounds, respectively.

Fancy Tech

Both the Denali Ultimate and AT4X models will impress occupants with a 13.4-inch infotainment display (that includes Google apps and services), driver-configurable 13.4-inch digital instrument cluster and 15-inch head-up display. They’re also equipped with a powerful Bose sound system that uses 12 speakers.

Another sign of modern times, as you can see on the pictures, is the fact that GMC designers moved the shifter from the steering column to the centre console. It’s the same thing inside the Silverado, by the way.

Updated Four-cylinder

Again, just like Chevy did, GMC made a few upgrades to the turbocharged 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine for 2022, resulting in increased torque (420 lb-ft). The 5.3-litre V8 and 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder Duramax turbo-diesel return with no changes, however.

The 2022 GMC Sierra is slated to arrive in dealerships next spring. Pricing for Canada will be announced closer to launch.
