2024 GMC Sierra EV Unveiled as Brand’s Second Electric Pickup

Published on October 20, 2022 in Electric by Germain Goyer

On this very day two years ago, GMC officially resurrected the Hummer by unveiling its first-ever electric pickup. Now, here’s the second—the 2024 GMC Sierra EV.

During a sneak peek in Royal Oak, Michigan, we managed to learn that the truck will not arrive in Canada until the 2025 model year. Remember, this is still 2022.

Ultium Platform and Battery

Like all next-generation electric vehicles introduced by General Motors, including the GMC Hummer EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, Equinox EV and Blazer EV, the zero-emission variant of the Sierra is built on the automaker’s Ultium platform. But don’t let the name fool you: it has virtually nothing in common with the conventionally powered truck.

Range is estimated at up to 640 kilometres and GM says drivers will be able to get 160 kilometres back in 10 minutes of charging when plugged into a 350kW DC fast charger.

As for output, the Sierra EV delivers as much as 754 horsepower and 785 pound-feet of torque, resulting in 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in less than 4.5 seconds. It can also tow loads of up to 9,500 pounds (4,309 kilograms).

Similar to the Silverado EV

Gas-powered Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models are similar in many ways, and their all-electric counterparts are no exception. As you can see on the pictures, the Sierra EV’s silhouette is pretty much the same as the Silverado EV’s. The GMC letters in the middle of the front grille are illuminated, while chrome accents are replaced by dark trim.

Another thing that’s been carried over from Chevy is the handy Midgate with pass-through that will allow users to fit longer items in the truck—from 5’11” to 9’1” long. To be clear, there’s no separation between the cabin and the cargo bed since the EV models are not the body-on-frame type (and not unibody, either, GM says).

Adding to the Sierra EV’s versatility, there’s a large trunk under the hood and the rear window can be removed and stowed inside the vehicle.

What’s more, following in the footsteps of the Hummer EV, the Sierra EV will be available with 4-Wheel Steer technology including a so-called CrabWalk mode enabling diagonal moves.

Denali Edition 1

GMC is using the same approach as Chevrolet, meaning the Sierra EV will initially launch in top-line trim—called Denali Edition 1—with all the bells and whistles you can imagine. Look for Denali badges and signatures throughout, including on the doors, wheels and dashboard. The unit we saw up close was riding on massive 24-inch wheels and came with an adaptive suspension. Inside, the infotainment system powers a 16.8-inch centre touchscreen.

More affordable Elevation and AT4 models will be offered eventually, though no details have been shared yet.

Canadian dealers are now taking reservations, but as mentioned up top, the first deliveries on this side of the border are more than two years away. (UPDATE: Reservations for the Denali Edition 1 are already closed.) Production of the 2024 GMC Sierra EV will take place at Factory Zero in Detroit.
