Confirmed: Hyundai IONIQ 6 to Offer up to 581 km of Range

Plenty of EV enthusiasts attended the Montreal International Auto Show in the past few days to see the all-new Hyundai IONIQ 6 for the first time in Canada. And it’s no wonder. This midsize electric sedan boasts eye-catching looks and exceptional range.

Enough with the estimates, we now have the real numbers.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has just posted its ratings for the IONIQ 6, and they go from 270 miles to 361 miles. Natural Resources Canada has not yet updated its public database, but Hyundai Canada was able to confirm to The Car Guide the official range figures on this side of the border.

Three IONIQ 6 models will be available, all of them equipped with the long-range battery (77.4 kWh). With the standard 18-inch wheels, single motor and rear-wheel drive, drivers can expect to travel up to 581 km—nearly 100 km longer than with the IONIQ 5 crossover, and slightly better than the Tesla Model 3 Long Range at 576 km.

Those who opt for the dual motors and all-wheel drive will manage up to 509 km. Again, this is a bit more than a comparable Model 3 (507 km). When choosing the Ultimate Package with 20-inch wheels, maximum range drops to 435 km.

This is possible thanks to the extremely aerodynamic silhouette of the IONIQ 6, which boasts a drag coefficient as low as 0.21. Incidentally, the smaller battery (53 kWh) that Hyundai offers in select markets will not be available in Canada, at least not for the time being.

With regard to performance, the AWD setup churns out 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft. of torque, while the RWD configuration delivers 225 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque.

Since the IONIQ 6 is built on the same platform as the IONIQ 5, we're assuming it will offer a maximum charging capacity of around 225 kW when plugged into a 350kW fast charger, which means it will be able to go from a 10-80 percent charge in 18 minutes. Also like the IONIQ 5, the sedan is fitted with the V2L (vehicle to load) function, which lets owners plug electric devices to the vehicle and use the battery as a charger.

The 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6 will go on sale in the spring, though pricing details remain a mystery at this point. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we have them.
