2.0L engine -- A brand-new Earth Dreams powertrain replaces the current 1.8L engine that’s been powering Civics since the 2006 model year. Based on the Accord’s engine, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit in the 2016 Honda Civic produces 158 horsepower (up from 143) and 138 lb-ft of torque (up from 129). It can be teamed up with either a six-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic.
Turbo 1.5L engine -- First turbo engine in a North-American Honda vehicle, the 1.5-litre four-cylinder gets direct injection and low-inertia turbocharger to develop 174 horsepower as well as 162 lb-ft of torque that peaks from 1,800 to 5,000 rpm. The only transmission choice here is a continuously variable automatic, or CVT.
Class-leading passenger volume -- According to Honda, the 2016 Civic boasts an interior volume of 2,769 litres, which ranks it at the top of the compact-sedan segment. Rear-seat hip room decreased by 104 mm – which is a lot – and rear-seat legroom is unchanged, but every other interior dimension has increased.
Bigger trunk -- The 2016 Honda Civic’s trunk now offers a volume of 428 litres, up from the previous generation’s 353-litre capacity. That’s a substantial increase, although it still can’t top the Volkswagen Jetta’s 439-litre trunk.
Heated rear seats -- In order to compete with its Korean rivals, the 2016 Honda Civic will feature two-level heated rear outboard seats. However, they are limited to the top-rung Touring grade.
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration -- Available in uplevel trims, the Civic’s infotainment system can integrate the operating system and interface of most smartphones, thanks to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay software.
Standard automatic climate control -- For the first time, the Civic will get a climate control system across the board. According to the automaker, this new system offers a 10-percent improvement in warm-up time compared to the one in the previous Civic, in addition to running with greater efficiency thanks to a Variable Displacement Compressor, which reduces load on the engine.
Honda Sensing safety -- The 2016 Honda Civic can be equipped with Honda Sensing, the brand’s suite of driver-assist technologies. That includes adaptive cruise control, a rearview camera, Honda LaneWatch passenger-side blind spot monitor, forward collision warning with collision mitigation braking, lane departure warning and lane keep assist, road departure mitigation and SmartVent airbags.
Five-door hatchback version -- It hasn’t been revealed yet, but Honda promises the 10th-generation Civic will be offered in Canada with a five-door hatchback body style. Whether or not it will have an effect of Fit and HR-V sales remains to be seen, but we’re glad to see a hatchback return to the Civic line-up.
High-performance Civic Type R -- Last but not least, the hot Civic Type R will finally make its way to Canada. Like the Civic Hatchback, the Type R will likely be derived from the European-market Civic – the plant in Alliston, Ontario will build only coupes and sedans – but it will be the most powerful Civic ever sold here. No details have yet been announced about the North-American version, but over in Europe, the Type R is powered by a turbo 2.0L engine that belts out 306 US horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
