2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the fabled BMW M3. This coincides with the company announcing its return to the 24 Hours of LeMans for 2018. The M3 made a name for itself as a race car, but the street version blew enthusiasts’ minds. The M3 has gone through a number of transformations over the last three decades, so let’s take a few minutes to rediscover the M3 in its many forms, some of which you may have never seen. 1986 BMW E30 DTM M3: The one that started it all. Was never intended to become a legend.
1986 BMW E30 M3: This is the most desirable and purest of M3s.
1986 BMW M3 pickup: Because BMW wanted to carry parts and whatnots around the plant…
1992 BMW E36 M3: This is when BMW got serious about power.
1996 BMW M3 Compact: Little hatchback with loads of power. The original M2.
2000 BMW E46 M3: Serious about power and performance. 333 horsepower from normally aspirated straight-six.
2000 BMW E46 M3 Touring: An M3 station wagon. What more can a person ask for?
2011 BMW E93 M3 pickup: BMW proves that pickups are cool with their second Frankenstein variant.
2014 BMW F80 M3: Turbocharging takes centre stage making massive power.
2016 BMW M3 30 Jahre: Horsepower is up from 425 to 45, and it’s Macao Blue metallic. Limited run.
