Top 10 Best-selling Cars in Canada in 2016

#10- Toyota Camry
It’s the only midsize car to break the top 10 list. The Camry scores with comfort, refinement and reliability. The hybrid variants of the Camry also deliver outstanding fuel economy at a relatively affordable price.

Sales: 15,683 units

#9- Ford Focus
On the market largely unchanged since 2011, the Focus is showing its age. And yet, it remains a versatile compact car with sedan and five-door hatchback configurations, an all-electric version and two performance editions, the hot-blooded Focus ST as well as the beastly Focus RS.

Sales: 16,627 units

#8- Hyundai Accent
The Accent’s getting old in its current form, but it’s still going strong. Good value and alluring purchase incentives help move out Hyundai’s subcompact, which is available in both sedan and five-door hatchback body styles.

Sales: 19,198 units

#7- Volkswagen Golf
Trailing the Jetta by only a few hundred units, the Golf is a tremendously versatile car. Despite the disappearance of the TDI engine, there’s still some good powertrains under its hood, including the ones in the performance-infused GTI and Golf R models. The crafty SportWagen and its high-riding Alltrack variant are unique in the compact-car category.

Sales: 19,966 units

#6- Volkswagen Jetta
The most affordable German car in Canada soldiers on as the most popular model in Volkswagen’s lineup. Sales are down in 2016 as the turbo-diesel engine hasn’t returned to the options list, and the fact that the company admitted to emissions-cheating devices likely hurt its reputation. The Jetta still managed a respectable 6th place.

Sales: 20,954 units

#5- Chevrolet Cruze
A total redesign didn’t help Chevy’s compact car to increase its sales numbers, but the previous-generation Cruze likely was offered with heavy rebates at the end of its product cycle to sweeten the deal. On the other hand, the new Cruze is now offered in a five-door hatchback configuration, and a diesel engine will once again be available in 2017.

Sales: 26,824 units

#4- Mazda3
Sales have been on a decline for the last couple of years as Mazda shoppers have taken a liking to the CX-3 and CX-5. The Japanese brand is trying to shift momentum by adding the innovative G-Vectoring Control system to the Mazda3 for 2017, in addition to more features.

Sales: 27,689 units

#3- Toyota Corolla
Despite its reputation for reliability and strong resale value, the Corolla has to stand on the third step of the podium, which actually isn’t all that bad considering who it has to be battle with. The five-door Corolla iM has been added to the total late in the year, which was actually last year’s Scion iM.

Sales: 45,626 units

#2- Hyundai Elantra
Every year, the Elantra gives the Honda Civic a run for its money, but ends up falling short on the sales charts. However, it has nothing to do with the car itself, as it’s available in stylish sedan and five-door hatchback body styles, and tons of features at a competitive price.

Sales: 48,875 units

#1- Honda Civic
Should we be surprised? The Civic is Canada’s most popular car since 1998, and it’s not showing signs of slowing down with the addition of a five-door hatchback to the lineup, alongside the sedan and the coupe. The upcoming Si and Type-R performance variants likely won’t be volume sellers, but they’ll definitely give the Civic more visibility.
