#9- Jaguar F-PACE
For the first time in its history, Jaguar is offering a utility vehicle. Sharing its platform with the XE sedan, the F-PACE boasts a sporty character and offers a choice of two engines: a 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel four cylinder that develops 180 horsepower and 318 pound-feet of torque as well as a supercharged, 3.0-litre V6 with 340 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard on all trim levels that include Premium, Prestige, R-Sport and S.

#8- Ram 1500
Ram is now offering several commercial vehicles, but it's the Ram pickup that remains its bestseller. The 1500 offers a choice of various configurations and numerous tried and tested engines, like the 3.0-litre diesel that generates 240 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque while consuming less than 9 litres per 100 kilometres. The 2500 and 3500 versions are available with a maximum towing capacity of 16,320 pounds (7400 kilograms) and 31,210 pounds (14,150 kg), respectively.

#7- Mercedes-Benz GLC
Formerly known as the GLK, the GLC was renamed to clarify the manufacturer's naming conventions. It has been fully revamped for 2017 and now features a style that is much closer to the other Mercedes-Benz SUVs. Its lineup includes the GLC 300, with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, and a more powerful version, the AMG GLC 43 with a 362-hp, twin-turbo V6. The GLC is also offered in a four-door coupe configuration.

#6- Porsche Macan
A relative newcomer to the market, the Porsche Macan has quickly become a favourite in the compact luxury SUV segment. Offering handling and refinement in a small, practical format, the Macan is now the reference in its class. The base version comes with a 252-horsepower, four-cylinder turbo, but you can opt for a twin-turbo V6 that produces 440 horsepower in the Turbo version with the Performance package.

#5- Fiat 124 Spider
It’s time to call a spade a spade: the Fiat 124 Spider is a slightly modified Mazda MX-5. Want proof? Just look at the cabin and exterior lines. Under the hood, however, the Fiat features a turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder developing 160 horsepower (164 in the Abarth sport version). As a result, the 124 Spider is a little more powerful than the Mazda and its 2.0-litre, naturally-aspirated engine. Both available manual and automatic gearboxes are six-speeds.

#4- Audi A4
This year, the A4, a luxury compact sedan, has been redesigned inside and out. What's more, there's also a wagon known as the A4 allroad. In both cases, the engine is a 2.0L four-cylinder developing 252 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. A quattro all-wheel drivetrain comes factory standard and is even more dynamic in the A4 allroad. Both the A4 and A4 allroad come in Progressiv, Komfort and Technik trims. The redesigned 354-hp Audi S4 sedan will soon arrive as well.

#3- Subaru Forester
The Forester’s front and tail ends have been updated and the XT trim gains a torque vectoring system that acts on its brakes. Both engines are back: a 170-horsepower, 2.5-litre flat-four and, in the XT, a 250-horsepower, 2.0-litre engine—not too shabby! The manual transmission remains a given with the 2.5-litre, while the optional continuously variable automatic is compulsory with the XT. Obviously, all-wheel drive is standard.

#2- Honda Civic
This is an important year for the Civic, as a five-door hatchback will be added to the lineup. The coupe and sedan still offer the choice of a 158-horsepower, 2.0-litre four-cylinder and a turbocharged, 1.5-litre engine that produces 174 horsepower. The manual gearbox will now be available on the latter. This year, Canadians will finally have access to the raging Type R—the most performance-infused Civic built so far—which will boast at least 300 horsepower.

#1- Mazda3
Still offered in sedan and hatchback (Sport) configurations, Mazda's compact is being treated to a few updates for 2017. It boasts a new grille, a different steering wheel and updated option packages. The engines remain the same: a standard 155-horsepower, 2.0-litre four cylinder and a 184-hp, 2.5-litre four in the better equipped versions. As always, you can choose between a manual and an automatic transmission.
