Top 10 Best-selling Cars in Canada in 2017

Published on December 22, 2017 in Top 10 by Michel Deslauriers

Another year, another record for new-vehicle sales in Canada. In fact, in 2017, more than two million units will have been sold. However, car sales are continuing to dwindle in favour of SUVs, with a 3.3% drop compared to 2016. Of all the vehicles sold in Canada in 2017, only 32% were cars.

Here are the top 10 best-selling cars in Canada in 2017.

10- Nissan Sentra
Ranked ninth after June 30, 2017, the Sentra managed to finish the year in the top 10, by a hair. Almost invisible on our roads, it continues to sell well thanks to its interior space, fuel-efficient powertrain and alluring price.

Sales: 13,883 units

9- Toyota Camry
After the first half of 2017, the Honda Accord had taken the 10th spot on the list from its arch-enemy, the Toyota Camry. However, from July onwards, the latter sold in greater numbers to push the Accord off the top 10 chart. Both midsize sedans were redesigned for 2018, and the Camry received a more noticeable appearance with its XSE trim levels.

Sales: 14,574 units

8- Kia Forte
In 2017, the Forte’s sales climbed by about 33% compared to 2016. An excellent result, considering that car sales in general are declining. The Forte climbed to the eighth position, up from the 14th spot among cars in 2016.

Sales: 16,388 units

7- Volkswagen Jetta
It’s getting old, but will benefit from a complete redesign in 2018. In fact, the 2019 Jetta will be officially unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show. In the meantime, the outgoing generation of the Jetta is still selling well, grabbing the seventh spot on this top 10 list.

Sales: 17,483 units

6- Volkswagen Golf
With some styling revisions and a few other improvements for the 2018 model year, and after the introduction of the e-Golf in 2017, the Golf continues its slow progression up the sales charts. It concludes the 2017 calendar year in sixth place, just in front of its sister Jetta.

Sales: 24,604 units

5- Chevrolet Cruze
The Cruze might not be as popular as the top guns in both the compact-car segment and this top 10 list, but it continues to gather its fair share of buyers. The addition of a hatchback version and a diesel engine option probably helped its cause.

Sales: 27,520 units

4- Mazda3
Having received some improvements for 2017, the Mazda3 keeps its fourth place in this list after dropping one spot after the first half of the year. Still available in sedan and five-door hatchback body styles, the Mazda3 should soon benefit from a major redesign and a new engine technology called SKYACTIV-X.

Sales: 27,862 units

3- Hyundai Elantra
During the 2017 calendar year, The Elantra had to concede its second-place spot to the Toyota Corolla. Despite that, the arrival of a redesigned five-door GT variant during the year could have a positive effect on its sales numbers in 2018.

Sales: 46,112 units

2- Toyota Corolla
With the transfer of the Scion iM to the Toyota brand in 2016, and becoming the five-door Corolla iM, sales of the compact car bested that of the Hyundai Elantra. It has to be said that longer list of features and the addition of sportier trim levels probably contributed to this year’s result.

Sales: 50,332 units

1- Honda Civic
Once again, the Civic stands on top as the best-selling car in Canada. With the most diverse product range ever, including sedans, coupes and hatchbacks as well as sporty Si and racy Type R variants, the Civic even increased overall sales by about 9% during 2017.

Sales: 69,030 units
