Top 10 Best-selling Utility Vehicles in Canada in 2017

Published on December 26, 2017 in Top 10 by Michel Deslauriers

Pickups dominated in 2017, while SUVs are still stealing market share away from cars. In Canada, more than two million vehicles will have been sold in 2017, and 68% of them consisted of trucks, SUVs and crossovers, which boasted a 9% increase in sales over 2016.

Here are the top 10 best-selling trucks in Canada in 2017.

10- Hyundai Tucson
The compact SUV climbed its way from spot #13 to #10 this year, pushing its big brother Santa Fe off the top 10 list. The Tuscon offers style, two efficient powertrain choices and plenty of features for the asking price.

Sales: 30,467 units

9- Nissan Rogue
Despite having to share the showroom floor with the new subcompact Qashqai, the Rogue still managed to post increased sales numbers, and grabbed the ninth spot on this top 10 list.

Sales: 43,418 units

8- Dodge Grand Caravan
As the affordable minivan is approaching retirement, sales are slowly winding down. The Grand Caravan slipped from spot #4 to #8 compared to last year, which is also explained by the constant rise in compact SUV sales.

Sales: 46,933 units

7- Ford Escape
Once the country’s best-selling utility vehicle by a significant margin, the Escape is facing tough times as it slipped one spot compared to 2016. It has now been surpassed on the charts by two of its long-standing rivals.

Sales: 47,880 units

6- Honda CR-V
Redesigned for the 2017 model year with a brand-new powertrain to boot, the CR-V saw its sales increased by about 14% compared to the previous year. It seems as though consumers are digging the SUV’s new look and improved fuel economy.

Sales: 50,443 units

5- Toyota RAV4
It’s getting up there in age, but the current-generation RAV4 is more popular than ever, with a slight increase in sales compared to 2016. It’s now Canada’s best-selling SUV for the second year in a row.

Sales: 50,894 units

4- Chevrolet Silverado
A brand-new, 2019 Silverado will be presented at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2018, and yet, Chevy’s current-generation full-size pickup increased its sales by a whopping 30% over 2016. That’s impressive.

Sales: 59,066 units

3- GMC Sierra
A redesigned Sierra should follow after the unveiling the of the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado. In the meantime, GMC’s full-size pickup saw a 20% increase in sales over 2016. GM’s on a roll, and if we combined sales of the Sierra and Silverado, the two cousins outsold its rival that currently holds the #2 spot on this year’s top 10 list.

Sales: 61,883 units

2- Ram Pickup
The Ram 1500 and Ram HD increased their sales numbers by 12% this year, but it still can’t come close to the reigning best-selling vehicle in Canada. On the other hand, standing in the second step of the podium isn’t anything to be ashamed of either. A redesigned 2019 Ram 1500 will show up at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2018.

Sales: 98,465 units

1- Ford F-Series
Once again, and to no one’s surprise, the F-Series, consisting of the F-150 and the Super Duty, is not only the best-selling truck in the country in 2017, but also the best-selling vehicle overall. Its rivals have caught up a little, but for now, the F-Series is still in a commanding lead. We’ll see what happens in 2018 when its three main competitors get redesigned.
