Cars with Borrowed Engines

In recent weeks, we’ve learned that the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid would come back for 2019 using Toyota’s proven hybrid technology and that Ferrari will supply engines for all Maserati vehicles in the future. These announcements inspired us to build a photo gallery with cars that house an engine from another manufacturer.

Let’s start with the Toyota 86, which as you know was developed simultaneously with the Subaru BRZ. It relies on Subaru’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine to produce 205 horsepower with the manual transmission and 200 with the automatic.

Toyota is also in a partnership with Mazda. The Yaris Sedan, which is sold in Quebec only, is a Mazda2 in disguise, with a 106-horsepower 1.5-litre SKYACTIV engine under the hood.

The INFINITI QX30 is a super-sexy sub-compact luxury crossover, which helps it stand out from direct competitors, most notably the Mercedes-Benz GLA. Its 2.0-litre turbo engine comes from the latter and similarly produces 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

The future of the Dodge Journey is still uncertain. Unlike many FCA products that benefit from the automaker’s Tigershark engine technology, this very old crossover still comes standard with a 2.4-litre mill that was initially designed by Hyundai as part of a Global Engine Alliance with Chrysler and Mitsubishi.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio manages to keep pace with the best sports sedans from Germany. Its 505 horsepower are the result of a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 developed by Ferrari.

Cranking out 503 horsepower and 505 pound-feet of torque, the new 2019 Aston Martin Vantage is a sensational sports car. Like the DB11, its 4.0-litre twin-turbo engine is sourced from Mercedes-AMG.

One of the fastest supercars at the Nürburgring is the 640-horsepower Lamborghini Huracán Performante. Since the brand is owned by Volkswagen, the 5.2-litre FSI V10 engine is borrowed from the Audi R8.

The new Lotus Evora 400 has arrived in Canada. Its 3.5-litre V6 generates 400 horsepower, creating an explosive pocket rocket.

The Pagani Huayra adds a German flavour to the Italian supercar segment. The 6.0-litre V12 engine that motivates the range-topping BC coupe unleashes more than 700 horses thanks to the magic of Mercedes-AMG.
