10 Things to Know About the Electrifying Jaguar I-PACE

Published on June 15, 2018 in Top 10 by The Car Guide

One of the most anticipated vehicles of the year, if not the past few years, is without a doubt the all-new 2019 Jaguar I-PACE, a compact all-electric luxury crossover that will directly rival Tesla products. We’ve just had our first drive in Portugal and it completely won us over.

Why is it so important and interesting? Here are ten things to know about the I-PACE…

Featuring standard all-wheel drive, the 2019 Jaguar I-PACE produces 394 horsepower and 512 pound-feet of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds—a hair quicker than a Tesla Model X 75D that is about $20,000 more expensive.

With a 90kWh lithium-ion battery (which is backed by an 8-year/160,000 km warranty), the 2019 Jaguar I-PACE offers a range of 386 km officially.

The battery can be charged to 80% in about 40 minutes via a DC fast-charging station. Using a 240V AC power source, it will take a little over ten hours to get the same charge. And don’t worry about winter: Jaguar has tested the I-PACE in extreme climates with temperatures as low as -40 degrees.

While artificially amplified inside the cabin, the sound of the electric motor is one of the most fascinating we’ve ever heard and it adds to the thrills caused by its brutal acceleration.

Engineers spoke about a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds, but that information has not been backed up by Jaguar.

The 2019 Jaguar I-PACE was designed by none other than Ian Callum, who’s also responsible for the magnificent Jaguar F-Type, Land Rover Range Rover Velar and Aston Martin Vanquish. His goal was to create the most desirable EV in the world. We guess the upcoming Porsche Taycan will have something to say about that…

The bold exterior lines of the I-PACE are emphasized by wheels up to 22 inches in diameter. The latter are split by a wheelbase of 2,990 millimetres, giving the vehicle a larger footprint than the Jaguar F-PACE.

The interior of the 2019 Jaguar I-PACE offers as much passenger space as some midsize vehicles, while the rear cargo area can swallow more than 700 litres (or double if you fold the rear seats down). Let’s not forget the 26-litre trunk up front!

The Touch Pro Duo infotainment system in the 2019 Jaguar I-PACE proves attractive and user-friendly. However, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration is not part of the equation at the moment.

The 2019 Jaguar I-PACE is currently in production and will be available immediately when it hits Canadian showrooms this September. The entry price is set at $86,500 before freight and delivery charges. Look for three trim levels including S, SE and HSE.
