Top 10 Best-selling Utility Vehicles in Canada in 2018

Published on December 28, 2018 in Top 10 by Michel Deslauriers

Overall new-vehicle sales decreased in 2018, but Canadian consumers have bought more SUVs and pickup trucks than in 2017, rising by 1%. However, the shift towards utility vehicles has continued as their market share has risen to 70%, to the detriment of passenger cars.

Here are the top 10 best-selling utility vehicles in Canada in 2018.

10- Hyundai Tucson
The compact-sized Tucson keeps its 10th place on this list, despite a sales drop of about 6% in addition to the arrival of the very popular Hyundai Kona that sits in the same showroom. The Tucson has receives a few improvements for the 2019 model year.

Sales: 28,634 units

9- Dodge Grand Caravan
Sales of the Dodge Grand Caravan took a 30% nosedive in 2018, and dropped a spot on this Top 10 list. In 2016, it actually ranked fourth. The 2019 model year will likely be the last one for this venerable minivan. Then again, it could survive another couple of years since the Chrysler Pacifica isn’t selling all that well.

Sales: 32,253 units

8- Nissan Rogue
Despite seeing its sales slip by about 4%, the Rogue climbed a spot on this list. It remains one of the most popular SUVs on the market, and Nissan’s best-selling vehicle in Canada.

Sales: 41,167 units

7- Ford Escape
The Escape is getting old, but it keeps selling at a brisk pace in Canada. Despite a sales dip of about 9%, it keeps its seventh place on this Top 10 list. Ford should unveil a new generation of the Escape sometime in 2019.

Sales: 43,857 units

6- Honda CR-V
Like the Ford Escape, the CR-V maintains its rank on the sales charts, but didn’t manage to move out of sixth place despite an interesting sales increase of 7%. Will the new 2019 Honda Passport steal some sales away from the CR-V? We’ll see.

Sales: 54,879 units

5- Chevrolet Silverado
The Silverado 1500 having been thoroughly redesigned, sales should pick up during 2019 after a 5% drop in 2018. In addition, the new Silverado HD has recently been unveiled, and will also go on sale in the course of the year.

Sales: 55,097 units

4- Toyota RAV4
Like in 2017, the Toyota RAV4 closes the year as the best-selling SUV in Canada while seeing its sales increase by 6%. The new generation of the RAV4 is arriving in dealerships, and should sell just as well as the outgoing model.

Sales: 55,385 units

3- GMC Sierra
In Canada, pickup buyers have shown a preference in the Sierra compared to its cousin Silverado. However, the difference between the two is negligible. Sales of the Sierra have dropped by about 8% compared to 2017, but the arrival of the new-generation Sierra 1500 should help move out more units of the full-size pickup.

Sales: 56,246 units

2- Ram Pickup
The Ram’s sales have plunged by about 14% in 2018 compared to 2017, partly caused by delays in delivering the new-generation Ram 1500 to dealerships last spring and the late arrival of the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6. And let’s not forget the temporary absence of the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel engine. Things should get back to normal in 2019.

Sales: 84,854 units

1- Ford F-Series
It will take a miracle to knock the Ford F-Series off its pedestal as the best-selling vehicle in Canada, despite its 6% sales drop. With very wide selection of F-150 trims as well as an impressive number of configurations of the Super Duty, this full-size pickup truck’s domination on the market isn’t a fluke.
