Top 10 Best-selling Cars in Canada in 2018

Published on December 31, 2018 in Top 10 by Michel Deslauriers

After record-breaking numbers these few past years, new-vehicles sales dropped by about 2% in 2018 compared to 2017. Canadian consumers still bought about two million cars and light trucks, but the car market is shrinking as it now represents only 30% of total sales.

Here are the Top 10 best-selling cars in 2018 in Canada.

10- Kia Forte
Receiving a full redesign for the 2019 model year—at least in the case of the sedan—the Kia Forte saw its sales increase slightly during the last few years of 2018, but not enough to surpass its total of 2017. It ends the year with a sales drop of about 12%. Nevertheless, this compact car ends up in tenth position on the list, down two spots compared to 2017.

Sales: 14,399 units

9- Toyota Camry
Here is one the rare cars in this Top 10 list to have seen its sales numbers increase, albeit by only a few units. At least the manufacturer can be satisfied with this stable number in a declining market, and on the sales charts, the Camry beat its eternal rival, the Honda Accord.

Sales: 14,588 units

8- Tesla Model 3
Surprise! A fully electric vehicle made its way among the top 10 best-selling cars in Canada in 2018. And not just any EV. The Tesla Model 3’s sales were so high through the second half of 2018 that it grabbed the #8 spot. Quite impressive.

Sales: 14,750 units

7- Volkswagen Jetta
The new generation of the Jetta arrived during 2018, with a redesigned body and the addition of many safety as well as comfort and convenience features. That didn’t prevent sales from slipping, just like the industry in general, and almost 14% less Jettas were sold in 2018 compared to 2017. Still, the car remains in seventh position on this Top 10 list.

Sales: 15,129 units

6- Volkswagen Golf
Status quo for the Golf that keeps sixth place on this list compared to 2017. On the other hand, sales were down by about 11% in 2018, while those of the brand’s SUVs—the Tiguan and the Atlas—have increased significantly. It’s worth nothing that by adding up sales of the Golf and the Jetta, Volkswagen would rank 4th on this list.

Sales: 21,477 units

5- Mazda3
The Mazda3 and the Chevrolet Cruze are in a constant battle on the sales charts these past few years, grabbing the fourth and fifth spots. An all-new Mazda3 in on its way, so we can expect enticing incentives on the remaining inventory of 2018 models in the new year. In 2018, sales were down by about 4%.

Sales: 26,728 units

4- Chevrolet Cruze
After General Motors announced in November2018 that the Cruze would get an early retirement, sales have sagged as consumers are losing interest in the car. However, it doesn’t mean the Cruze is a bad car, and the 2019 models could be offered at a good price.

Sales: 26,867 units

3- Hyundai Elantra
Despite the arrival of a redesigned hatchback model, the Elantra GT, Hyundai’s compact car couldn’t keep its sales pace. However, even with a 9% decrease compared to 2017, the Elantra remains on the podium.

Sales: 41,784 units

2- Toyota Corolla
Once again, the Corolla is conceding the win to the Honda Civic. A sales drop of about 3% in 2018 compared to 2017 didn’t help, but the gap between the two cars was too wide to bridge in a single year anyhow. The arrival of the new Corolla Hatchback might give Toyota’s compact car a sales boost.

Sales: 48,796 units

1- Honda Civic
No surprise, no suspense. The Civic is once again the best-selling car in Canada in 2018, and even managed to keep its sales numbers stable while most other cars are seeing their numbers fall. Congrats Honda!

Sales: 69,005 units
