The 10 Best Car Brands for 2019 According to Consumer Reports

Published on March 2, 2019 in Top 10 by Michel Deslauriers

Every year, U.S. publication Consumer Reports evaluates a slew of different products, and that includes automobiles. For the 2019 model year, it compiled scoring for all cars and trucks tested to create an overall ranking by brand. However, CR excluded Maserati, Ram and smart as its criteria includes having tested at least two models per brand.

The final scoring is composed of its road test evaluation, predicted reliability, satisfaction from owners surveyed as well as the availability of essential and safety features.

Here are the 10 best car brands this year. Also, check out the 10 worst car brands for 2019 according to Consumer Reports.

10. Hyundai (score: 73)
Climbing two spots since the last ranking, Hyundai manages to hit the top 10 list thanks to its good predicted reliability, et of the 10 models tested, Consumer Reports recommends seven of them.
Let’s note here that out of the 33 brands ranked, positions 11 to 23 are occupied by Volkswagen (71, up five positions), Kia (70, down six positions), Honda (70, up four positions), Infiniti (70), MINI (69, up ten positions), Acura (68, up six positions), Mercedes-Benz (67, down two positions), Buick (67, up one position), Tesla (66, down 11 positions) Ford (65), Nissan (64), Chrysler (64, down 11 positions) and Volvo (63, down five positions).

9. Toyota (score: 73)
The Toyota brand climbs a spot in the ranking with good predicted reliability, high customer satisfaction and 13 recommended models out of 17 tested. However, it’s the scoring obtained during Consumer Reports’ testing that prevents Toyota from being ranked higher in this list.

8. Lincoln (score: 73)
With adequate predicted reliability, a high level of satisfaction from its customers and good results obtained during CR testing, the Lincoln brand ends up in eighth position. Out of the five models tested, two are recommended by the publication.

7. BMW (score: 76)
Strong reliability isn’t expected in the case of the BMW brand, but owners are very satisfied and the models tested received excellent results from Consumer Reports. And yet, the latter only recommends four out of eight models evaluated, and the brand fell four positions compared to last year’s list.

6. Mazda (score: 76)
Reaching the top 10 brands by climbing seven spots, Mazda seems to be doing well in predicted reliability and customer satisfaction. Out of the five models tested by Consumer Reports, four are recommended purchases.

The Lexus brand slips one position compared to the previous ranking, but still impresses with excellent predicted reliability. Five models out of eight tested by Consumer Reports are recommended.

3. Porsche (score: 79)
The German sports car brand reaches the third step of the podium thanks to its customers who are extremely satisfied, according to CR surveys. Porsche models obtained the best scores of all vehicles tested by the publication, and three out of four models evaluated are recommended purchases.

2. Genesis (score: 80)
Last year, Genesis surprised many by topping the list of the best brands by Consumer Reports. It’s been dethroned, but keeping second place is still pretty good. Its predicted reliability is adequate, but owners of these cars are very satisfied, and it’s worth noting the good results obtained during Consumer Reports’ testing. Two of their three models are recommended.

1. Subaru (score: 81)
Good predicted reliability, satisfied owners and commendable results obtained during Consumer Reports’ testing were enough to send Subaru to the top of this list of best brands by the American publication. An impressive improvement of six positions compared to last year’s rankings. And out of the eight models tested, CR recommends seven of them.
