Top 10 most affordable 2019 cars with air conditioning

Published on July 31, 2019 in Top 10 by Michel Deslauriers

Just like a car in winter with a heating system, it’s almost unthinkable to drive around in the summertime without air conditioning—especially during lengthy heat waves. And although A/C is essential in the hotter months of the year, it helps defog the windshield more quickly in winter, so it’s useful all year round. Here are the lowest-priced 2019 cars in Canada that include air conditioning, freight and delivery charges excluded.

#1 – 2019 Chevrolet Spark

We have a new A/C champ in 2019, as the Nissan Micra’s entry price climbed by about $500 due to the addition of a rearview camera and a touchscreen infotainment system. The Chevrolet Spark LS paired with its automatic transmission includes air conditioning and is listed at $14,295. To get A/C and a five-speed manual, we must go for the Spark 1LT that costs $14,695.

#2 – 2019 Nissan Micra

Since its base price was readjusted to $10,488 for the 2019 model year, due to the standard infotainment system with a seven-inch touchscreen and now-mandatory rearview camera, the Nissan Micra is no longer the most affordable car in Canada. Still, by adding the automatic transmission and A/C to the base S trim, the minicar costs $14,298. The Micra can no longer be equipped with a manual transmission and air conditioning together.

#3 – 2019 Nissan Versa Note

We can choose a base Versa Note S at $14,698, which includes A/C as standard equipment. With the optional continuously variable automatic transmission, the price rises to $15,998. It’s worth nothing that the Versa Note will be discontinued after the 2019 model year, so we better not wait too long if this subcompact hatchback interests us.

#4 – 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage

To obtain air conditioning in this fuel-efficient city car, we must choose the Mirage ES Plus hatchback that’s listed at $14,998. Adding the optional continuously variable automatic raises the price to $16,198. Otherwise, the Mirage G4 sedan includes A/C as standard equipment in its base ES trim, which costs $15,498 with the manual gearbox and $16,698 with the CVT automatic.

#5 – 2019 Kia Rio

The Rio is offered in sedan and five-door hatchback formats, and to get air conditioning, we must choose the LX+ trim. The price of the sedan climbs to $16,445 while the hatchback’s MSRP rises to $16,645. A six-speed automatic is offered for an extra $1,400.

#6 – 2019 Ford Fiesta

The little Fiesta is priced a little high for a subcompact, but at least it includes air conditioning as standard equipment. The Fiesta S sedan with a manual gearbox sells for $16,763, and to add the automatic transmission, we must move up to the SE trim level—in sedan or five-door hatchback configuration—which ends up costing $20,174. This is the final year for the Fiesta before it retires from the Canadian and U.S. markets.

#7 – 2019 Hyundai Elantra

The Elantra pops onto this Top 10 list as the most affordable compact car that includes air conditioning. The latter is available from the base Essential trim level, which is listed at $16,999, or $18,699 with the optional automatic transmission. However, the 2020 model is arriving in dealerships as we speak, costing a hundred bucks more than the 2019.

#8 – 2019 Toyota Yaris

For its final year in its current form—the Yaris will be redesigned for 2020, based on the Mazda2 subcompact hatchback sold in other markets—Toyota’s most affordable car offers air conditioning in the LE 5-door variant that starts at $17,015. Choosing the automatic transmission instead of the standard manual gearbox raises the price by $1,000. Meanwhile, the Yaris Sedan will be discontinued in Canada after 2019, and it’s equipped with A/C as standard from $16,595, or $17,700 with the automatic transmission.

#9 – 2019 Kia Forte

Along with its Korean cousin Elantra, the compact Kia Forte grabs a spot in this list by offering A/C as standard, for a base price of $17,195. That’s for the LX trim equipped with a manual transmission. If we prefer the optional automatic, the Forte’s MSRP climbs to $18,995.

#10 – 2019 Hyundai Accent

The Accent subcompact drops two spots on this list compared to last year. Whether we’re talking about the sedan or the five-door, the Essential trim with the Comfort package includes air conditioning and an automatic transmission for a price of $17,349. If we prefer a manual gearbox, we’ll have to settle for the Preferred trim at $17,549. The Accent sedan will be retired from the Canadian market after the 2019 model year, while the 2020 model-year Accent five-door—arriving soon in dealerships—gets a $300 price hike.
