10 Anticipated New Model Debuts in 2020

Published on January 10, 2020 in Top 10 by Guillaume Rivard

This year is different in the auto industry—and not just because it’s the start of a new decade. Sure, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas kicked things off as usual, but the Detroit Auto Show will now take place in June instead of January.

More than ever, automakers are choosing not to attend the traditional shows. Many launch their new products at special events to attract more attention.

Here are 10 new models that will be unveiled sometime in 2020…

2021 Genesis GV80
The first-ever Genesis SUV will officially make its debut on January 16 (while The Car Guide is busy at Media Day for the Montreal Auto Show). The brand offered a sneak peek a few days ago and is counting a lot on this product to boost sales.

2021 Cadillac Escalade
After the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban in December and the GMC Yukon this month, the Cadillac Escalade will complete GM’s full-size SUV offensive. The debut will take place during Oscars week on February 4. Already, we’ve seen the gigantic 38-inch oLED display. What else does the new Escalade have in store? Will an electrified powertrain be part of the mix?

2021 Ford Bronco
The world premiere of the all-new Ford Bronco will take place in the spring. The company did not mention a place or a date, so we don’t know if it will be during a special event somewhere or as part of the New York Auto Show in April or the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in early June. There will be at least two different body styles (including a smaller model reportedly to be named “Bronco Sport”), removable roof and doors similar to the Jeep Wrangler, and several powertrains including a hybrid.

2021 Volkswagen ID. 4
In Canada, the first member of Volkswagen’s next-generation EV family will be the ID. 4 crossover based on the ID. CROZZ concept from 2017. More dynamic than the Tiguan, it’s expected to be powered by a 83-kWh battery offering a range of more than 400 kilometres. Production will begin in late 2020. The ID. 4 will be sold in starting in early 2021.

2021 Hyundai Tucson
In the popular compact SUV segment, the Tucson is one of the oldest contenders (the current generation dates back to 2016). Hyundai can’t afford to lose too much time. “The whole world will freak out over the [next-generation Tucson],” the company’s global vice president of design SangYup Lee said last year. We’re anxious to see it!

2021 Toyota Tundra/Sequoia
Most of the full-size pickups in Canada were completely redesigned for 2019 or 2020. The Tundra dates back to… 2007! Right now, Toyota is putting the final touches to a shared platform—known internally as “F1”—for the next-generation Tacoma and Tundra. Also, keep in mind that the Sequoia full-size SUV currently shares its underpinnings with the Tundra, which means a brand-new version of that model could be introduced in the near future, too.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The venerable Grand Cherokee is entering the tenth and final year of its fourth generation. A completely redesigned model is due for 2021. What can we expect? It will still have a two-row configuration, but also a brand new platform, a more spacious interior and many cutting-edge technologies (including maybe the 12-inch centre screen found in the latest Ram 1500). An electrified powertrain has already been announced.

2021 BMW iX3
BMM will unveil the new 4 Series with that gigantic grille from the Concept 4, but more importantly the iX3 electric SUV. The latter will roll off its Chinese assembly line beginning in 2020 with the fifth generation of BMW’s eDrive electric propulsion technology, which will later be used by the i4 and iNEXT. Look for an output of 286 horsepower and a range of nearly 400 kilometres.

Jaguar’s Second Electric Car
The XJ full-size sedan, which was dropped from production after eight generations and 51 years on the market, will be reinvented as a battery-powered car in 2020. It will be created by the same team of designers and product specialists responsible for the Jaguar i-PACE, although the electric drive units will be developed in a partnership with BMW.

2021 Acura TLX
Last summer, Acura unveiled a brand new sedan concept that sets the stage for the launch two Type S performance variants in the next two years after a decade-long hiatus, beginning with the second-generation TLX Type S. The design is absolutely stunning with a powerful and expressive silhouette. Sure, SUVs are better sellers, but the industry needs cars like this one.
