Top 10 Most Affordable New SUVs in 2020

Published on February 13, 2020 in Top 10 by Guillaume Rivard

Across the auto industry, rising prices combined with the elimination of several car models in favour of larger and costlier vehicles—SUVs, to be clear—have definitely put some pressure on consumers, who must either spend more money or turn to the used market.

It is still possible to find brand new SUVs and crossovers at a very cheap price, although all of them come standard with front-wheel drive and many don’t even offer an AWD option.

Here you will find the 10 models with the lowest manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) in Canada. Which one do you have your eye on?

Note: The MSRPs listed on the next few pages are all accurate at the time of writing. However, they are subject to change at any time.

10. 2020 Subaru Crosstrek - $23,795
The Crosstrek benefits from a few updates for 2020, but remains highly affordable in base trim. The fuel-efficient engine under the hood also helps save money, not to mention the tremendous resale value.

9. 2020 Toyota C-HR - $23,650
The little C-HR is big on style and technology, not so much on driving dynamics, as evidenced by the absence of an AWD option.

8. 2020 Mitsubishi RVR - $22,998
The refreshed 2020 Mitsubishi RVR has arrived at Canadian dealerships sporting a bolder look up front. While the lineup still consists of seven trim levels, the structure and the names are a bit different. The base ES FWD model still carries a very attractive price.

7. 2020 Chevrolet Trax - $21,898
The latest revision to the Trax dates back to 2017 and no significant change was made this year. Despite being the brand’s smallest and cheapest SUV, it offers many available connectivity and safety technologies.

6. 2020 Nissan Qashqai - $21,498
Positioned somewhere between compact and sub-compact crossovers, the Qashqai is $1,500 more expensive this year. The base trim has front-wheel drive and a manual transmission. AWD is optional.

5. 2020 Hyundai Kona - $21,249
The award-winning sub-compact crossover from Hyundai appeals to Canadians with a great combination of edgy styling and modern technology. The Kona also boasts a pair of efficient gasoline engines rated at 147 and 175 horsepower.

4. 2020 Kia Soul - $21,195
Is the Soul a car or a crossover? That’s still up for debate. When you compare its exterior and interior dimensions with those of other models on this list, however, there is no doubt. AWD is missing, unfortunately.

3. 2020 Mazda CX-3 - $21,045
A manual gearbox and front-wheel drive allow the CX-3 to sell at a very cheap price. AWD is available, even in base trim.

2. 2020 Nissan Kicks - $19,298
Despite a price bump for 2020, the Nissan Kicks remains below the $20K mark. No trim level can be had with AWD, but that doesn’t stop Canadians from buying many of them.

1. 2020 Hyundai Venue - $17,099
Check out that price! The all-new, FWD-only Venue is the latest and most affordable SUV in the Hyundai lineup. Styling is quite distinctive, while the minimalist interior comes standard with an eight-inch display and heated front seats. However, the trunk has a 530-litre capacity, which is less than the small Accent hatchback that shares its platform and 1.6-litre engine with the Venue.
