Top 10 Least Popular SUVs in Canada

Published on May 4, 2020 in Top 10 by Guillaume Rivard

SUVs are extremely popular across North America right now—they combine with pickups to represent three quarters of the light-duty vehicle market—but not all are created equal. For various reasons, some models fail to attract a decent number of customers.

Are they still relevant? That’s certainly up for debate. Here are the 10 lowest-selling SUVs in Canada based on 2019 stats.

Note: To be fair, we excluded models that hit the market or were eliminated at some point during the year, as well as those with a fully electric powertrain or coming from a prestige brand (Bentley, Lamborghini, Maserati, Rolls-Royce) since they target just a tiny fraction of the market.

10. Infiniti QX80 – 935 units sold in 2019
Infiniti is going through some tough times—more than other luxury automakers—and the full-size QX80 is no exception.

9. Land Rover Discovery – 693 units sold in 2019
Within the Land Rover lineup, Range Rover models enjoy a stronger reputation and sell better. Few people seem to like the Discovery.

8. Jeep Renegade – 664 units sold in 2019
Jeeps are fairly good sellers, but when it comes to small SUVs, the Renegade is too expensive, too old and too unreliable.

7. BMW X6 – 610 units sold in 2019
The X6 is a coupe variant of the X5 SUV, making it a niche product in a way. However, it has been around for many years already. Will the updates for 2020 make a difference?

6. Nissan Armada– 593 units sold in 2019
Believe it or not, the Armada is even less popular than its luxurious cousin, the Infiniti QX80. One thing’s for sure: styling is not everyone’s cup of tea.

5. Toyota Sequoia – 543 units sold in 2019
Unlike most other Toyota vehicles, the Sequoia is a poor seller. We’ve been waiting for a next-generation model to arrive for ages.

4. Alfa Romeo Stelvio – 458 units sold in 2019
Unsurprisingly, the Stelvio is Alfa Romeo’s best-selling product. When you look at the numbers, though, that’s far from an impressive feat.

3. Jaguar E-PACE – 417 units sold in 2019
As good as the F-PACE is, the smaller E-PACE has been a failure in Canada so far. Admittedly, competition in the small luxury SUV segment is pretty fierce and the E-PACE lacks name recognition.

2. Lexus GX – 377 units sold in 2019
Stuck between the highly popular RX and the more established LX, the mid-size GX has a tough time standing out. The fact that the former is much more attractive and now available with a third row doesn’t help.

1. Fiat 500X – 50 units sold in 2019
That’s right: only 50 units of the 500X were sold in Canada last year. People are visibly scared by Fiat’s awful track record of reliability.
