10 Cars That Need a High-performance Model

You don’t need a Ferrari to have a blast on the road. In fact, some of the most exciting cars to drive are sporty variants of ordinary cars. Think Volkswagen Golf GTI or Ford Mustang GT.

Here’s a list of 10 modern cars that should definitely offer a high-performance model in their lineup.

Toyota Tacoma
The Tacoma does have a rugged TRD Pro model, but what about a Baja-style pickup with a raised suspension like the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison? Or maybe a supercharged V6?

Mazda MX-5
The current generation of the Mazda MX-5 received a boost from 155 to 181 horsepower, which is nice. We dearly miss the Mazdaspeed variant, though. Imagine 250 ponies under that tiny hood!

Mazda3
Our Best New Car of the Year is far from boring, but it could use the 2.5-litre turbo from the Mazda6 and CX-5. A new Mazda3 with old Mazdaspeed3 levels of power would perfectly challenge the Volkswagen Golf R!

Chevrolet Silverado
There’s the Ford F-150 Raptor and the upcoming Ram Rebel TRX (with more than 700 hp!), so why is Chevrolet taking so long to introduce the rumoured Silverado ZRX?

Cadillac XT5
While the new CT4 and CT5 sedans have sportier, more powerful models coming, Cadillac is not rushing into the performance SUV game. Yet, it needs a juiced-up XT5 to compete with the Germans.

Toyota Corolla
The best-selling car in the world could use a sportier variant. Toyota must prove it can build an affordable hot hatch. Luckily, it looks like we’ll be getting a GR-branded Corolla with 250 horsepower in the near future.

Volkswagen Tiguan
Volkswagen is trying to appeal to more American drivers with bigger vehicles like the new Tiguan, which is less fun to drive than the original. How about a Tiguan GTI with a sport suspension and more power under the hood?

Chrysler 300
There have been sportier Chrysler 300 models in the past, but the current lineup is pretty sad. This large sedan has so much flair and potential; why doesn’t FCA stick a Hellcat engine under the hood?

Honda Accord
A high-performance Honda Accord? Oh yes! The current generation offers a detuned variant of the Civic Type R engine. It’s time to introduce a full-fledged Accord Type R.

Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ
A new generation of these sporty coupes is coming for 2021, hopefully with the same handling prowess and a more powerful engine. Fans of the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ have been waiting for that for a long time.
