Need a used car or SUV with a cheap price and low ownership costs? There are admittedly plenty of options out there, which is why trusted magazine Consumer Reports has identified the best ones under $10,000 USD. We used the list for our latest Top 10.

Essentially, any Canadian with a budget of $15,000 should easily find a copy of any of these models—and save considerable money on repairs and maintenance for years to come.

As always, a full mechanical inspection is a must, but you should feel extremely confident buying one of the vehicles shown here.

2011-2013 Honda Fit
This small hatchback impresses with high levels of versatility, agility and reliability. It’s also quite safe and fuel-efficient. A choppy ride and noisy cabin are the main complaints. Get more details here.

2010-2014 Toyota Corolla
Roomier and quieter than its predecessor, this Corolla also made a big leap in terms of safety. It’s not the most exciting car to drive by any means, but it rides smoothly and proves extremely reliable. Pick the ECO model for maximum fuel savings. Get more details here.

2010-2013 Mazda3
The second-generation Mazda3 is a great choice for those who want a fun and affordable compact car, although the rear seats are tight. In 2012, a new model with a 2.0-litre SKYACTIV engine and updated transmissions improved fuel economy and refinement. Get more details here.

2008-2012 Toyota Prius
Looking for a proven hybrid that will last many years and save you lots of money? The Prius is an obvious choice—just ask most taxi drivers. Toyota completely redesigned the car for 2010, adding more features and enhancing safety in the process. Get more details here.

2009-2012 Honda Accord
Redesigned for 2008, this Honda Accord stands out with above-average handling and interior space. Drivers also enjoy excellent visibility, straightforward controls and a smooth powertrain. The Accord’s arch nemesis, the Toyota Camry, is also a tremendous purchase in this segment. Get more details here.

2007-2012 Acura TL
The second-generation TL has many great attributes, but it fails to stand out in any particular aspect. Furthermore, styling is not everyone’s cup of tea. Having said that, the 3.5- and 3.7-litre V6 engines are strong performers and reliability champs, making the TL a smart purchase. Get more details here.

2006-2011 Acura TSX
A bit smaller and less powerful than the TL, the Acura TLX still proves quite pleasant to drive and just as reliable. A new generation debuted for 2009 and was killed after 2013. This is a solid used luxury sedan for people who want peace of mind and more money in their pockets. Get more details here.

2007-2011 Lexus ES
Sharing its platform and powertrain with the Toyota Camry, this generation of the Lexus ES 350 houses a 3.5-litre V6 blessed with 268 smooth and efficient horses. Impeccable build quality and a serene ride make the car ideal for relaxation on the road. Get more details here.

2008-2011 Toyota RAV4
Unlike the new RAV4, this one was available with a smooth and potent (269 horsepower) V6 engine. Of course, the base four-cylinder (179 horsepower) is easier on gas. Look for a compliant ride and spacious interior, too. On the other hand, the lateral-opening tailgate gets in the way when parked curbside.  Get more details here.

2005-2007 Toyota Highlander
Well-rounded and dependable, the family-friendly Highlander has long been a safe bet. Quiet, roomy and relaxing to drive (some will say boring), this midsize SUV is a rational purchase more than anything else. Get more details here.
