For fuel economy purposes, most automakers are turning to smaller-displacement engines, often with a turbocharger to maintain power at an acceptable level.

Some even dare to rely on just three cylinders. While that’s not unusual in Europe and other markets, it’s a different story in North America. If only we could have the sensational Toyota GR Yaris!

2021 Buick Encore GX
Slighty larger than the Encore, the new Encore GX offers two triple-cylinder engines: a 1.2-litre unit (137 hp, 162 lb-ft, 8 L/100 km) and a 1.3-litre variant (155 hp, 174 lb-ft, 8.5 L/100 km).

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer
Just like the Buick Encore GX, the all-new Trailblazer offers a pair of triple-cylinder engines: a 1.2-litre unit (137 hp, 162 lb-ft, 8 L/100 km) and a 1.3-litre variant (155 hp, 174 lb-ft, 8.4 L/100 km).

2021 Ford EcoSport
The low-selling Ford EcoSport comes standard with a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine (123 hp, 125 lb-ft, 8.4 L/100 km).

2021 Ford Escape
The Escape comes standard with a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine (181 hp, 190 lb-ft, 7.8-8.4 L/100 km).

2021 Ford Bronco Sport
The all-new Bronco Sport shares its platform and base turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine (181 hp, 190 lb-ft, 8.9 L/100 km) with the Escape.

2021 MINI Cooper
In base trim, the MINI 3 Door, 5 Door and Convertible models use a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine (134 hp, 162 lb-ft, 7.5 L/100 km).

2021 Mitsubishi Mirage
