Top 10 Most Fuel-Efficient Compact SUVs in 2022

With gas prices soaring to unprecedented heights across the country, many drivers understandably want to spend less time at the pump. But not all of them are prepared to get rid of their precious SUVs.

The good news is that automakers have come up with more fuel-efficient models in recent years including hybrids. Here are the top 10 compact SUVs with the best fuel economy on the market in 2022.

Notes:

  1. Luxury models are not included and neither are fully electric SUVs.
  2. Fuel consumption ratings are those posted by Natural Resources Canada.

10. Ford Bronco Sport

As the Bronco’s smaller sibling, the Bronco Sport features a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine. With standard AWD, it achieves a combined 8.9 L/100 km.

9. GMC Terrain

Under the hood of the Terrain is a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine mated to a nine-speed autobox. FWD-equipped models need just 8.6 L/100 km on average.

8. Chevrolet Equinox

The engine in the Equinox is the same that powers the Terrain, but the former is more fuel-efficient at 8.4 L/100 km. And that’s despite a transmission with six gears only.

7. Subaru Forester

Combining a 2.5-litre flat-four engine with a CVT, the AWD-only Forester averages 8.2 L/100 km.

6. Honda CR-V

The 2022 CR-V doesn’t offer a hybrid variant in Canada, but that will change with the next generation coming for 2023. In the meantime, expect to achieve 7.7 L/100 km with the turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine in FWD configuration.

5. Nissan Rogue

Using a new-for-2022, turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine, the Nissan Rogue dropped its combined fuel consumption rating to 7.2 L/100 km. That’s when the CVT sends power to the front wheels only.

4. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

The Outlander PHEV offers a range of 39 kilometres and achieves 3.2 Le/100 km in EV mode. However, it’s not so efficient in hybrid mode, needing 9.1 L/100 km. Don’t miss the significantly upgraded and longer-range 2023 Outlander PHEV going on sale in the second half of 2022.

3. Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and Tucson PHEV

The Hyundai Tucson Hybrid boasts a rating of 6.4 L/100 km, which is slightly better than the PHEV variant in hybrid mode (6.7 L/100 km). The latter achieves 2.9 Le/100 km and will travel up to 53 kilometres on battery power alone, though.

2. Ford Escape Hybrid and Escape PHEV

Both models are rated at 5.8 L/100 km combined. The Escape PHEV can go for 60 kilometres without burning any fuel, representing 2.2 Le/100 km.

1. Toyota RAV4 Prime

Shocked? Yeah, probably not. The Toyota RAV4 Prime is the most fuel-efficient compact SUV in Canada right now, averaging 5.8 L/100 km. Same thing for the RAV4 Hybrid, by the way. The Prime delivers an EV range of up to 68 kilometres (2.5 Le/100 km).
