10 Car Names That Should Make a Comeback

Published on May 27, 2022 in Top 10 by The Car Guide

Automakers seem to love reviving classic models and names as they turn to the future and add new chapters to their stories.

Which ones will be next? We at The Car Guide had some fun putting together a list of retired car names that would be great to see make a comeback in the next few years. Tell us what you think!

Viper

Several names from Dodge would be cool to bring back, but let’s go with the iconic Viper. The brand is slated to launch a fully electric muscle car in 2024. Would it be a good idea to call it Viper? Let the debate begin!

Thunderbird

Growing rumours suggest the Thunderbird is the next classic name that will make a return. This comes after Ford filed an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in January of 2021. You see, the iconic GT supercar is retiring in 2022 and there won’t be a halo car above the Mustang, let alone an alternative to the Corvette. Even though coupes are selling in limited numbers now, a sporty grand touring model is reportedly being considered by Ford.

Jimmy

Why is General Motors still missing a rugged off-road SUV to take on the popular Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco? The return of the Chevrolet Blazer/Trailblazer was not what many people expected, so all hopes are on GMC’s Jimmy nameplate now. Consider it a long shot, though.

RX

The RX-7 and RX-8 made their marks with Mazda’s signature rotary engine. A return has long been rumoured, especially since the debut of the RX-Vision Concept in 2015, but it looks like Mazda has other priorities at the moment (you know, SUVs).

Beetle

After the classic Beetle and the modern Beetle, Volkswagen could decide to bring back its most iconic model as it enters the age of electrification. The Bus is back with the ID. Buzz, so why not an ID. Beetle?

Evolution (Evo)

Mitsubishi is focused on SUVs now, but the current lineup definitely lacks excitement. Performance models would be great, and of course using the (Lancer) Evolution name, or Evo, would make sense. In fact, Mitsubishi has already thought about it with the e-Evolution crossover concept.

Firebird

How do you bring back the Firebird while Pontiac is dead and coupes are marginal sellers. That’s a good question. Here’s an idea: GM is supposed to launch 30 all-electric models globally by the end of 2025. We’re pretty sure one of them would be cool enough to get the Firebird moniker.

Celica

Is there room in the Toyota lineup for another sporty model alongside the new GR 86, GR Supra and upcoming GR Corolla? Maybe or maybe not. But if there is, we’d be pleased if Toyota named the car after the long-running Celica?

Dakota

Seriously, Ram needs a smaller and cheaper pickup to sell alongside the 1500. Ram 1000 and 1200 models are offered in other markets, and it is believed that a North American equivalent could join the lineup in the near future. How about a new Ram Dakota?

Silvia

The Silvia lineup no longer exists, but it remains an important name in the history of Datsun/Nissan in Japan (the models we had here in North America were sold as the 200SX and 240SX). It would be cool if Nissan were to use it for a new global product, maybe the small electric crossover slated to replace the LEAF.
