Auto Shanghai 2023 Photo Gallery: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Published on April 19, 2023 in Shanghai by Guillaume Rivard

Some of the new models that made their debut at Auto Shanghai this week will make it to Canada, including the 2024 Porsche Cayenne, 2024 BMW i7 M70 xDrive, 2025 Polestar 4 and 2025 Volkswagen ID.7.

Most, however, are designed for China and perhaps a few other global markets. It’s easy to figure out why when looking at them. Browse through our photo gallery above and try to get past that new Lexus LM minivan!

HiPhi unveiled an electric crossover called Y featuring two-piece rear doors that open outwards and updwards. Think the Tesla Model X is jealous?

Nissan's Pathfinder Concept for China is similar in size to our Pathfinder, but the design is not. The multi-blade front grille and alloy wheels are just one example, the latter looking like those on the 2023 LEAF.

Another concept from Nissan, the Arizon is an electric SUV designed by a Chinese team leveraging the automaker's global EV expertise. There are no plans for production at the moment.

The Cannon CyberP!ckup 6x6 is inspired by six-wheeled custom trucks like those on display at SEMA. Developed by China's Great Wall Motors, it rides on 33-inch Cooper Discoverer AT3 tires.

Lexus unveiled the next-generation LM hybrid minivan with one of the most polarizing faces ever. It will be sold in over 60 countries including Japan and Europe for the first time. Despite the 48-inch screen inside, we're not complaining that it won't be offered in Canada.

The RC Essence is fully electric. This concept by Chinese automaker SAIC Motor will eventually enter production, but for now, there are no specs, just a wild design.

Honda introduced a trio of electric SUV concepts for China, including this coupe-style model called e:NP2 Prototype.

About the same size but with different looks, this one is called e:NS2 Prototype.

This other EV concept from Honda, the e:N SUV, hints at a new generation of e:N models slated to launch in China by the end of 2024.

Here are two electric concepts Toyota showed at Auto Shanghai 2023. They will enter production next year, but it's not immediately clear whether they will be exported or not. We'd gladly take the bZ Sport, though.

By mid-2024, the MG Cyberster electric convertible will launch in China. No specs are available at the moment, but the company is promising a high-performance EV. Meanwhile, where is Tesla's new Roadster?

The smart #3 is larger and sleeker than the smart #1 unveiled in 2022. It will be sold in China, then Europe starting early next year. Specs are unknown, but we absolutely love the design.

The new BYD Seagull is like a Chinese Chevrolet Bolt EV, but with shorter range and a much lower price. Think around $14,000 CAD.

Chinese automaker XPeng unveiled the G6, an electric SUV with smooth lines and a brand new platform. Maximum range is estimated at 755 km, but that's based on the test cycle used in China.

Chinese customers love long-wheelbase vehicles. This variant of the BMW X1 is about 11 cm longer, giving rear-seat occupants more legroom.
