Doomed Dozen: 12 Vehicles Expected to Die Around Mid-Decade

Published on September 7, 2023 in Galleries by The Car Guide

While some cars and SUVs have been confirmed not to return following the 2023 model year, others are living on borrowed time and could disappear not long after that.

Here’s a look at a dozen models we’ll likely have to bid farewell to around mid-decade, based on information from automakers as well as credible industry sources like Automotive News’ Future Product Pipeline and AutoForecast Solutions.

BMW 8 Series

Refreshed for 2023, BMW’s grand touring luxury coupe will survive until 2026 and then be replaced by an electric successor. Learn more about the 8 Series.

Chevrolet Camaro

The sixth-gen Camaro will stop production next January, so 2024 marks its final model year. This won’t necessarily be the end of the nameplate, mind you. Chevy said it will live on in some shape or form (probably as an EV) beyond mid-decade.

Chevrolet Malibu

The demise of midsize sedans continues with the discontinuation of the Malibu, which is predicted to come in 2025. No one will shed a tear. Chevrolet is bound to strike back with an electric sedan at some point.

Ford Escape

Updated for 2023, the Escape doesn’t seem to have a gas-powered or hybrid successor in the work. Production is expected to end in 2025 and a new electric crossover, possibly built in Ontario, will take its place.

Infiniti QX50

Despite a nice redesign five years ago, the QX50 is a bust in terms of sales. All signs point to the model being replaced by an electric SUV around 2026. The sooner the better, honestly. Prepare to kiss the coupe-like QX55 goodbye, too.

Jaguar I-PACE

Jaguar’s future is electric but the current I-PACE won’t be part of it. The brand wants to start over with a brand new portfolio after 2025. That means the gas-only F-PACE and E-PACE will be gone, as well.

Maserati Ghibli

The low-selling Ghibli never really stood a chance. A new generation isn’t part of the plan, and it looks like 2024 will mark the end of the road for this Italian sedan.

Mitsubishi Mirage

The days of the Mirage are numbered. In fact, all small cars will be gone from the Canadian market in the near future. According to several sources, the cheapest new vehicle in the country will end production in 2025.

Nissan Altima

Reports indicate the Altima will be dropped once the current generation comes to an end in 2025. An electric midsize sedan is expected to replace the long-running Nissan model.

Nissan Versa

Nissan made a gamble with the return of the Versa in 2021. It hasn’t quite worked out. The small sedan will reportedly vanish by mid-decade, joining the Altima.

Nissan LEAF

Another Nissan? That’s right. The LEAF is currently built at three different plants in Japan, the U.K. and the U.S., but it will bow out around mid-decade, after which a small electric crossover will take over.

Volvo XC40

There’s significant change in store for 2024, but production of the XC40 is still expected to end sometime in 2026, with no direct successor planned. Volvo is obsessed with going electric, remember. The larger XC60 could be gone by the following year, too.
