Stunning EV Concepts to Highlight 2023 Japan Mobility Show

Published on October 13, 2023 in News by The Car Guide

The 2023 Japan Mobility Show (formerly known as Tokyo Motor Show) will run from October 25 to November 5. The Car Guide will have three journalists on hand to cover all the various debuts.

Many have already been announced through official releases and teasers. In most cases, we’ll be talking about concepts that foreshadow the new design and technology directions of Japanese automakers.

Above is a quick overview of what’s in store in Tokyo. Don’t miss our coverage from Media Day in less than two weeks!

Honda

Alongside a variety of urban mobility solutions at the “Honda Dream Loop” booth, Honda will showcase a “Specialty Sports Concept” that could very well be one of the two cars hidden in the picture above. It will “enable the driver to experience the pure joy of driving and transcend the constraints of time, even in the era of electrification for carbon neutrality and the popularization of automated driving technology,” Honda said in a statement.

No further details have been provided, which still leaves plenty of room for speculation. We don’t even know if it will be a Honda or Acura product. A report from Japan late last year suggested Honda was planning to bring back the Prelude as an electric coupe. Meanwhile, Acura has hinted at an electric successor to the NSX hybrid supercar.

Lexus

The Lexus booth theme will be "Pushing the Boundaries of the Electrified Experience" and will debut its next-generation battery electric vehicle concept model lineup. All we have for now is a pair of images including the one above, which hints at a low and wide sports car—maybe the heir to the iconic LFA.

Mazda

At the Japan Mobility Show, the Mazda stand will focus on the beloved MX-5. Additionally, a new concept designed to symbolize the exhibit theme will be unveiled as a world premiere at the show. Don’t get too excited about an electric MX-5 yet: Mazda says it won’t happen until much lighter batteries are available.

Nissan

Nissan will display four new electric SUV concepts at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show. Two of them are pictured above—the Hyper Urban and Hyper Adventure. As you can see, Nissan designers weren’t afraid to defy styling conventions once again.

Infiniti

Yet another EV concept but still no electric Infiniti on the road. This time could be different, though. The Vision Qe concept previews the luxury brand’s first zero-emission model. The teaser above suggests a car or a low-slung crossover with extremely smooth lines.

Subaru

Subaru is preparing a “Sport Mobility Concept” that expresses “the enjoyment that Subaru offers in the age of electrification, embodying the pleasure of going anywhere, anytime, and driving at will in everyday to extraordinary environments.” Essentially an evolution of the brand’s sporty values. Don’t you think it’s reminiscent of the old Subaru SVX?

Mitsubishi

Over at Mitsubishi, an electrified crossover concept will embody “Borderless Adventure” with a vastly spacious cabin, high ground clearance, an electric four-wheel drive system and “the cruising range and driving performance to handle all kinds of adventures.” It looks like a futuristic version of the Delica, which can still be spotted on and off the road across North America if you pay attention.

Toyota is set to reveal two electric concepts in Tokyo: the FT-Se sports car (pictured above) and the FT-3e SUV. Excited yet?
