Top 10 Most Affordable AWD Vehicles for Tackling Winter

Published on November 18, 2023 in Top 10 by Nicolas Tardif

Finding a cheap car or a cheap SUV is one thing, but we live in Canada where winters are tough for many drivers and compromising on safety is never a good thing.

All-wheel drive can be a precious ally in adverse road and weather conditions including snow, sleet and ice. Luckily, more and more vehicles at all price points are now available with this feature.

Some will say that all-wheel drive is overrated. During the cold season, a good set of winter tires is arguably more important. We tend to agree. On that note, take a look at our best picks.

Still, if you’re looking for a cheap AWD vehicle for tackling winter, here are the top 10 most affordable models in Canada right now.

Note: The MSRPs listed here are all accurate at the time of writing. However, they are subject to change at any time. They do not include freight and PDI, other applicable fees, or available rebates and offers.

10. Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross – Starting at $28,998

Slotting between the RVR and Outlander, the Eclipse Cross comes standard with Mitsubishi’s renowned S-AWC system.

9. Subaru Crosstrek – Starting at $28,995

Completely redesigned for 2024, the Crosstrek is now significantly more expensive in base trim but still the best buy in the small-SUV segment and a tremendous vehicle for tackling winter.

8. Chevrolet Trailblazer – Starting at $28,699

The Trailblazer received a mid-cycle update for 2024 and costs $2,000 more than before. Unlike the cheaper new Trax, this crossover offers AWD.

7. Toyota Corolla Cross – Starting at $28,650

The Corolla-based crossover comes with standard front-wheel drive, but adding all-wheel drive still makes it one of the most affordable winter fighters.

6. Mazda CX-30 – Starting at $28,150

All CX-30 models now feature Mazda’s i-Activ all-wheel drive system while offering better ground clearance than the cheaper Mazda3, which is also available with AWD.

5. Toyota Corolla Hybrid – Starting at $28,090

This is the cheapest hybrid in Canada (starting at $26,590) and also one of the most fuel-efficient (4.7 L/100 km combined). The AWD variant is a bit more expensive and achieves 4.9 L/100 km.

4. Hyundai Kona – Starting at $27,999

A new generation of the Kona has arrived for 2024, with a base price up $3,600. That’s gotta hurt for many customers. When equipped with AWD, it just misses the podium, here.

3. Kia Seltos – Starting at $27,195

Unlike the Kona, the Seltos is simply getting an update for 2024. Don’t miss the new X-Line model with adventure in mind.

2. Subaru Impreza – Starting at $26,795

The Impreza is all-new for 2024 and the base price point is up $3,500. Blame the elimination of the manual gearbox, among other things. The new 2.5-litre engine (182 hp) is a great addition, though.

1. Mitsubishi RVR – Starting at $26,598

The 2024 RVR is priced just the same as the 2023 model, which is quite refreshing in these times of inflation. While the current generation dates back to 2011, the RVR remains a dependable vehicle backed by the industry’s best warranty.
