Top 10 Longest-Running Vehicle Designs in 2024

Published on March 15, 2024 in Top 10 by Guillaume Rivard

Not all car shoppers want the latest or most cutting-edge products on the market. Likewise, not all automakers are in a hurry to redesign their vehicles, especially when demand is still strong.

The Car Guide has compiled a list of the 10 oldest models on the road in 2024, meaning those with the longest-running current generations. Check them out!

Mitsubishi Mirage

Most people laughed when the tiny and under-powered Mirage made its debut in Canada back in 2014, but with other subcompact cars dropping like flies, it’s now one of just two contenders left (along with the Nissan Versa). Good news: standard content has been updated for 2024.

Lexus IS

The current generation of the Lexus IS dates back to 2014, with a major update for 2021. Despite having a foot stuck in the past, it continues to win over customers thanks to excellent reliability.

Infiniti Q50

The Q50 in its current form dates back to 2014, and it shows. The infotainment system no longer holds up to modern standards, and the overall interior looks and feels dated. The main reason why people turn to this compact luxury sedan is still the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 under the hood, which generates either 300 horsepower or 400 horsepower depending on the model.

Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte

The 2024 model year marks the end of the road for the Ghibli (and the company’s turbocharged 3.8-litre V8). This poor-selling compact luxury sedan from Italy is just as ancient as the large Quattoporte. Both made their debuts a decade ago.

Porsche Macan

Born in 2014, the Macan is living on borrowed time as a fully electric replacement is coming soon. According to a report by Automotive News Europe, instead of phasing out the conventional Macan in North America two or three years from now, Porsche apparently wants to keep it in the lineup as long as it takes for the Macan EV to become a strong seller.

Tesla Model S

Believe it or not, the Model S sedan has been around for 12 years now. Styling appears to be stuck in time, but performance continues to rank near the top of the industry. The Long Range model offers up to 652 km of zero-emission driving, while the explosive Model S Plaid delivers 1,020 horsepower. By the way, the Model X crossover is just three years younger.

Dodge Durango

Dodge’s three-row SUV is built alongside the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The latter was redesigned for 2022, but the Durango has been pretty much the same since 2011. It’s still a relatively strong seller, mind you.

Mitsubishi RVR

Despite receiving a few cosmetic tweaks, the RVR is now having a hard time hiding the fact that its design dates back to 2011. A new generation that is essentially a rebadged Renault Captur exists over in Europe, but it looks like Canada won’t be getting it. The future looks murky.

Toyota 4Runner

The 4Runner is a dinosaur among midsize SUVs. In fact, the current generation dates back to 2010, making it by far Toyota’s oldest model. And yet sales remain strong, largely due to the 4Runner’s excellent reliability and residual value. A successor is expected to arrive for 2025, as previewed by the redesigned Tacoma.

Nissan GT-R

When the current GT-R debuted in 2009, it represented the pinnacle of technology. Fifteen years later, “Godzilla” is no longer competitive when it comes to safety and infotainment, not to mention the fact that electrification is completely absent. It looks like 2025 will be the final model year.
